If you shine a powerful laser, held at dead level, does the level of the beam drop at all?

February 1, 2010 – 7:02 am
at any point, like say, a rifle bullet will? And secondly, how far will it shine into space before it stops, assuming it doesnt hit anything that would block it? is it based on the initial power and strength of the laser? Would two different lasers, one being twice as powerful as the other, shine different distances into space?

Ancient Surveying/Land Systems?

January 19, 2010 – 9:18 am
I currently have the task of developing a term paper on a topic relative to the history of Surveying. In the course we beat ancient Greece, Egypt, and Mesopotamia into the dirt with hours of lecture, but I wanted to do the paper on something a bit more exotic. Id like to do either the Aztecs or the Japanese (post-Edo period to 1800's). Now I know that any info on the Aztec land management is relatively stark, although seeing as how Tenochtitlan was an island based capitol, some sort of educated outline must have been formed about the layout of the city. If anyone could shoot me a link or author's name about either the Aztec or old Japanese land layout/measuring systems, Id be infinitely grateful! Thanks!

How did land surveyors, survey before electronics?

January 6, 2010 – 6:58 pm
I often wonder how on earth did old land surveyors survey in remote areas with little distinguishing landmark features? Were they accurate? Can their accuracy affect landholders of today if they stuffed up? If it was cloudy could they still work? It just seems that we rely on GPS allot now, but it would be still good to know how they did it before all the gadgets of today were in existence. Yours answers would be gratefully accepted.
